Book Looks for Independent Reading Why should students’ independent reading of both nonfiction and fiction be added to your already packed curriculum? How can students demonstrate their learning when they are all making different reading choices? In this workshop you will learn about many activities—from skits and scripts to posters and puzzles—that you can use to assess students as they get excited about reading and about sharing their learning. Making Ties With the HumaniTIES Does your curriculum focus on specific historical periods? While this workshop focuses on the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression, you will become familiar with reading strategies that you can use to teach any time period. Also, you will learn how to assess your students as they immerse themselves in the culture of the times, by their participation in activities like the Gatsby Gala and Pivotal Passages. During the workshop you will have some time to use the computer to access, and share, some activities that you can use in your curriculum to make ties with the humanities. Going Beyond “Learn the Term” with Multi-Genre Teaching In your content area are your students satisfied to merely learn the term? In teaching the concept of an “…ism”—whether transcendentalism, romanticism, communism, socialism etc.-- you can enable students to go beyond the mere memorization of new terms by employing strategies that will introduce higher order thinking skills as an integral part of word study. In fact, when students use supplemental materials from comics to music lyrics, and from literary genres to art, they get excited about the alternative opportunities to learn new concepts that are provided by multi-genre teaching. Word Play of the Day While the teaching and learning of language and grammar may seem tedious to many, it doesn’t have to be! When students are first engaged in word play, they are subsequently more likely to find the serious study of language more interesting and understandable. To set the stage for serious grammar and vocabulary study, you can begin with Word Play of the Day, a class starter of five to ten minutes, focusing on a particular aspect of language. Be prepared to have fun as you participate in many of these starter activities, including games, puzzles, charts and webs, that you can use to enliven language study in your classroom. Radio Plays: A Sound Educational Experience * This workshop will familiarize you with the structure of the radio play, a format that you can implement with students of all ability levels and in any content area. This approach is effective not only for students to write creatively, but also for students to demonstrate their learning of a particular theme or concept. You will learn about the steps in the process for students, as they work in small groups, first conducting and sharing studentcentered research, and then writing and producing a radio play. *Repeated workshop Connie's workshop handout |
