Nonfiction Toolbox: Resources for Reading Nonfiction can often be the hook for those kids who are otherwise unengaged. Learn about the nonfiction books your students will fight over and explore how to use them for instruction. You will leave this workshop ready to integrate interesting nonfiction books that teenagers love into your class. Using Prediction & Questioning to Establish a Purpose for Reading Are there students in your school who do not pay attention to or do not complete their reading assignments? You can help students improve their reading completion and comprehension by teaching them strategies which will give them a purpose for reading and help them pay attention. In this workshop, we will focus on predicting and questioning strategies. We will look at ways to establish an environment which values questions. We will also examine strategies which can help students establish a purpose for reading both fiction and nonfiction texts. Let’s Get Them Talking: Purposeful Conversation in the Classroom Most of our students are great talkers until we ask them to discuss a text or elaborate on their thought processes. In this workshop we’ll look at strategies such as “Say Something” and PACA which promote conversations that will enhance reading comprehension and learning. The Reading-Writing Connection* Reading and writing go hand in hand, so how can we use writing to support the teaching of reading and how can we use reading to support the teaching of writing? In this workshop we will look at writing activities that can support reading comprehension before, during, and after reading. Then we will look at how we can use our reading to teach and model, not just assign, writing. “Writing the Way to Standardized Success” Want to teach writing creatively but find there is no time left after you’ve drilled students for the standardized test prompts? In this workshop we will discuss and try writing strategies which are fun, creative and will also help students succeed on standardized tests. *Attend part one in order to attend part two.
