Looking for Good Nonfiction Literature? How do we provide students with meaningful experiences with quality nonfiction literature? Explore possible resources and activities that engage students and enhance their comprehension of nonfiction literature. Nonfiction: That’s a Fact! What are the features and text structures of quality nonfiction literature? Participate in activities that will help your students to talk about what they’re learning, as well as how they’re learning from published text. Meeting Words in Nonfiction Text* How can teachers help students understand and use the technical language and specialized vocabulary in nonfiction text? Investigate instructional strategies that will help your students identify powerful vocabulary and extend their knowledge through vocabulary exploration to strengthen reading comprehension, make connections, and build a solid knowledge base. Keener Observations: Better Answers How do students successfully attack and understand nonfiction text to compose and organize information in short answer/constructed response questions? Read articles, use graphic organizers, develop a list of mini-lessons for the classroom, examine student/teacher resources, and practice the strategies for writing short answers/constructed response. The Craft of Writing Nonfiction How can we use quality nonfiction literature as models for enhancing student informational writing? Engage in dialogue about the models students use to: ask questions; gather information; collect powerful vocabulary; interpret data; record findings; and finally, publish and present their own nonfiction writing. * Repeated workshop |
